For many of us men “of a certain age”, when it comes to our dress sense, we’re often pretty clueless! While some of us have not moved on since our early twenties (wearing ripped jeans and Deep Purple tour tee-shirts from 1974!) others among us merely sleep walk towards the “Easy-Fit” trouser and “No Iron” polyester shirt look. Not a good look!
Why bother?
Obviously, it’s a free world, and you’re free to wear exactly what you want. But if you feel you’re now ready for a bit of a revamp, you can look forward to several key advantages; improved confidence, a better reflection of your true personality, the chance to make a really positive impression on those you meet – be they professional or personal – and the chance to dress more comfortably – wearing clothes that are properly cut for the older frame. Plus, you get the chance to experiment a little with some new styles that could well enhance your overall image.
Get thee to a barber!
First things first, a fresh haircut and style that’s modern but at the same time, in keeping with your age, can do wonders for your appearance. And if you’re usual barber isn’t up to the mark, don’t feel put off by seeing a higher end unisex hair stylist. Meanwhile, if like many of us, you’re now developing more hair up your nostrils, eyebrows or from your ears than you are on your head, talk to your stylist about the best ways of removal – without question, this will take years off you!
Who inspires you?
Try and identify your own personal style – so start by working out what kind of clothing you like, and what makes you feel comfortable. And why not take inspiration from those older celebrities who’s style you admire (George Clooney? Bill Nighy? Daniel Day Lewis?) Magazines, and even people you see on the street, can all be a great place to look and draw inspiration.
Quality over quantity
Invest in good quality basics. By doing so, you’ll have a solid “capsule wardrobe” that can easily be mixed and matched with other pieces. So includes such items as crisp, white cotton shirt, a well made, well fitted pair of jeans or casual trousers, a jacket and a couple of decent pairs of shoes – so some smart leather dress shoes and well-made trainers would be a good place to start.
Experiment with colour
Without going all Michael Portillo (who often looks like he’s had an argument in a paint shop), don’t be afraid to add a splash of colour to your wardrobe. This can easily be done through accessories such as ties, pocket handkerchiefs and socks.
Accessorise
Accessories are also a really good way to add some personality and individuality to your look. So consider adding a dress-watch or a stylish retro watch, a leather belt, and some decent sun glasses – and stylish frames that are right for your face if you wear glasses for sight correction. And don’t forget to get a higher grade men’s bag for when you’re out and about.
Does it fit?
Fundamental to looking and feeling good is wearing clothes that fit properly. This means avoiding anything too baggy or too tight. So when clothes shopping, do try different sizes and styles to find the ones that fit you best – and don’t be shy to ask the opinion of one of the sales assistants.
Second opinion
And on the subject of opinions, If you’re just not sure about your style choices, why not ask a friend or family member, whose style you admire, for their opinion? You can even hire your own personal stylist or shopper to help get you started and set you in the right direction.
Remember, whatever your age, dressing well is all about feeling confident and comfortable in your own skin; not being afraid to experiment and try new things, and actually enjoy your new sense of style!
