In a recent television programme made by the late Dr Michael Mosley, it has been scientifically proven that learning a new skill – especially later in life – can do wonders for our mental health, mental agility, cognitive skills and memory.
I’m brushing up on my Italian, which seems much easier to do these days, with plenty of free language learning videos on YouTube. I’ve also discovered that it’s possible to slow the YouTube videos down, which makes them easier to follow while I get up to speed on each one, which is fantastic.
It would be interesting to hear if anyone else learnt a new skill recently & if it has helped you.
Ciao!
10/10/2024 at 10:24 am #8580I took up knitting last winter, just to keep my hands busy while watching the telly. Thought it might be a bit of a faff, but I’ve surprised myself with how much I enjoy it!
The first scarf was a bit lopsided, but I’ve got the hang of it now and even made a hat for my grandson. I find it quite realxing, actually – puts me in a nice head space, and I reckon it’s done my concentration a world of good.
Plus, there’s a real sense of pride in making something from scratch!

Who knew there were so many tricks to getting things to grow! I even got a patch of tomatoes going this year, and they were far better than the supermarket ones.
I think it’s helped me keep a routine too; there’s always something to look after or trim back, so I’m out there in the fresh air more often. Keeps me fit and in a good mood, that’s for sure!
25/10/2024 at 2:39 pm #8584I picked up watercolour painting on a whim after seeing an online class. I thought, well, I’ve got the time, why not? Turns out, I’ve got a bit of a knack for it! I’m no pro, but I’ve painted a few landscapes that aren’t half bad.
It’s like seeing things with fresh eyes – colours, shapes, shadows. My family love that I’ve taken it up, and it’s given me a sense of focus that I hadn’t felt in a while.
Really keeps my mind sharp, and I’m sleeping better too!”
01/11/2024 at 10:07 am #8585My daughter convinced me to do a tech basics course, and now I can’t believe I ever managed without it! I can do emails, book my prescriptions online, and I’ve even had a go at video calling.
It’s like learning a new language, but it’s opened up a whole new world for me. I feel much more in touch with the family – my grandson sends me little videos now, and I can actually reply instead of getting lost in the buttons! It’s been brilliant, honestly.
