Your guide to great hair styles and colouring
Just because you’re now over 60, there’s no actual legal obligation to go and get your hair permed like a poodle and coloured blue! A great hair style can not only take years off your appearance, but it can make a real difference to the way you feel, and be a major boost to your confidence. So here at Regenerated Me, we’ve put together our top style and colouring choices which you can talk through with your own hairdresser to see what could be right for you.
The Classic Bob
The classic bob cut, where the hair is cut between neck and shoulder-length, can be a great option – it’s both easy to maintain and can be styled in lots of different ways.
Pixie Cut
If you’re seeking that more edgy and bold look, a low maintenance Pixie cut, where the hair is cut short on the back and sides but left slightly longer on the top, could be the one for you.
Layered Haircut
If your hair’s long but on the fine side, this could be perfect for you. This gives a look of thicker, younger-looking hair by arranging it in layers, with the top layers nearer the crown cut shorter than the layers beneath. This style of layering can also work well if your hair is naturally curly.
Shoulder-Length Waves
If you prefer your hair on the longer side, consider shoulder-length waves. This style adds texture and movement to your hair, with the waves softening your features to help make you look younger. The addition of highlights will also add dimension to your hair. This length is versatile and can be styled in many different ways, from straight and sleek to wavy and voluminous.
Up-do Hairstyles
Particularly good for those special occasions or big nights out; up-do hairstyles, where the hair is “swept” or arranged into an up-style, can be elegant, sophisticated…and sexy!
Side-Swept Fringe
Side fringes can be great for the more mature woman as they can soften facial features that can get a bit harsh-looking with age.
Glad to be Grey!
These days, grey doesn’t have to mean “old”. With the right cut, clean-looking grey can be quite stunning. Think Helen Mirren, Diane Keaton and Jamie Lee Curtis!
Balayage
Balayage – the French word meaning “to sweep” – is a colouring technique where highlights are hand-painted or “swept” on random sections of your hair. These highlights tend to start mid-shaft and become denser towards the end of the shaft. This helps create that natural-looking, sun-kissed effect, adding dimension and depth without being OTT! This technique is also low-maintenance, and so ideal if you don’t want to spend a lot of time at the salon.
Soft Highlights
Another consideration is to add some soft highlights to your hair. Without being too harsh, they can add real depth and dimension to your hair. Here, go for warm, golden hues that can brighten up your face… and make you look younger!
Wigs
Somehow, wigs for women always look so much better than wigs for men! So if your hair is just too fine or sparse to do much with – or you wan the option to simply change your style whenever you wish, a wig may just fit the bill. To get an idea as to what could work for you, try Googling “wigs for older women”.
Remember, the most important thing is to choose a style and colour that’s right for you. One that will make you feel confident, comfortable and more youthful. So talk to your stylist
